Sandra Freij

Biography

Sandra Freij has a wide-ranging background in photography. Since her teens Sandra has explored the world of art photography and fashion photography, editorially and commercially. She holds a B.A. from the University for the Creative Arts in UK and also an M.A. from the School of Photography and film in Gothenburg, in native Sweden.

Sandra’s pictures have a cinematic quality both in terms of their lighting and their narrative form of expression, an approach that creates a visceral sense of excitement. She is known for her romantic and feminine pictures that are marked by subtle sensuality and underlying darkness. With her extensive knowledge of imagery she is highly skilled at balancing ambiguous and imaginative work with both openness and accessibility. She is well known for her lighting using a combination of continuous, strobe and daylight, which draws inspiration from the Nordic light surrounding her growing up in Sweden.

EDITORIAL WORK

On completion of her MA Sandra started her career working for Dazed and Confused as well as ANOTHER magazine in London.

Her editorial work explores her personal style through a pictorial reality, which is dark and light, silent and loud, prosaic yet magical. She explores the essence of fashion through the idea of identification to the otherworldly seen through the lens of a woman.

Editorial clients include: The Violet Book, German Flair magazine, BARE Journal, Commons and Sense, Dazed & Confused, Lula,  Another magazine, Another Man, MIXTE, GQ Style, Exit, Velvet, Amica, Rodeo, Livraison, Bon, Swedish Elle.

COMMERCIAL WORK

Through her fashion photography, Sandra has worked commercially with fashion houses such as AND OTHER STORIES, HM, TIGER OF SWEDEN, MARNI, MIHARA YASUHIRO, TOPSHOP, WHISTLES, ORLA KIELY, HARRODS MARKS AND SPENCER, BODEN, MONSOON and MARIMEKKO amongst others. She has also shot campaigns for beauty brands such as TIMOTEI and MOLTON BROWN.

Sandra’s work offers a cross section of approaches. The light, sensuality and feminity present in Sandra’s portfolio lend itself to the world of beauty and skin.

Using her skill for interiors and still lives, Sandra has combined her fashion photography with interior in campaigns for MARIMEKKO, HARRODS, PUB, House Of Fraser.

The magic realism in her photographic world lends itself to traditional advertising where where we find her work in campaigns for CONFORAMA, BABYBJORN and DISNEYWORLD amongst others.

EXHIBITIONS, LECTURING AND BOOK PROJECTS

During recent years, Sandra’s work has been exhibited internationally in group and individual shows, most recently in Sweden at ABECITA KONSTMUSEUMs exhibition “MUSES, DREAMERS and FASHIONISTAS” displaying 90 of her works created in context of editorial fashion.

Her images also appear in various books such as: "High Heels; fashion, femininity and seduction" by Valerie Steel/ Hudson. "DIY Fashion Shoot book" published by We Are Photo girls. "Pattern" published by Orla Kiely. Amongst others.

Personal project includes the ongoing web based portrait series "FOR FUTURES SAKE" where Sandra is using her lens to "tell hopeful stories about active citizens in a declining world" . Visit the project on this website.

KINDRED SPIRITS

More recently, Sandra’s work with children has led her images to grace the campaigns of DISNEYWORLD, NO ADDED SUGAR, HARRODS KIDS, and BABYBJORN amongst others.
